Jem gulped like a goldfish, hunched his shoulders and twitched his torso. ‘What’s he doin’, trying to catch his tail?’ There’s some gauze in the bathroom, go get it and do it yourself.’ ‘There’s somethin’ wrong with an old dog down yonder.’Ĭalpurnia sighed. ‘What for Jem? I can’t come down the sidewalk every time you want me.’ ‘Can you come down the sidewalk for a minute?’ And finally Scout had something that she was truly proud of her dad for. The kids were amazed, and later Miss Maudie told them that they used to call Atticus “One Shot Finch”. So, Atticus took the gun, quickly aimed it, and killed the dog with one shot. The Sheriff had a gun, but said he would rather Atticus shot it. Atticus came home from work with Sheriff Heck Tate. The children told Calpurnia about this, who then called Atticus. Did you know he can play a Jew’s Harp?’”īut, as the story went on, a mad dog came walking down their street. ‘It’s about time you found out it’s because he lets you. ‘Good Lord, Miss Maudie, Jem and me beat him all the time.’ ‘Well, did you know he’s the best checker-player in this town? Why, down at the Landing when we were coming up, Atticus Finch could beat everybody on both sides of the river.’ ‘Well, he can make somebody’s will so airtight can’t anybody meddle with it.’ ‘Not being wheeled around yet, am I? Neither’s your father.’”, “‘I sure would. ‘I don’t call fifty very old,’ said Miss Maudie tartly. Dubose is close to a hundred and Miss Rachel’s old and so are you and Atticus.’ Jem and me’s the only children around here. ‘Nome, I mean the folks on our street are all old. He sat in the living room and read.”, and “‘Miss Maudie, this is an old neighborhood, ain’t it?’ When Jem and I asked him why he was so old, he said he got started late, which we felt reflected upon his abilities and manliness.”, “He did not do the things our schoolmates’ fathers did: he never went hunting, he died not play poker or fish or drink. This is supported by, “Atticus was feeble, he was nearly fifty. One day she asked Miss Maudie about this, she told her that Atticus still has a lot of life left in him, and has quite a few unique talents. She said that he couldn’t do many of the things the other dads did, all he did was sit and read. In the beginning, Scout called feeble and old she seemed upset that her dad was so much older than all of the other dads in town. Miss Maudie later tells the kids that when Atticus was younger, they called him ‘One Shot Finch’, and Scout finally had something great about her dad. Heck wanted Atticus to shoot the dog, and even though he was pretty far away, he got him in a single shot. Atticus comes back from work with Heck Tate, the county sheriff. Later on, a mad dog comes walking down the road toward the Finch’s house, Jem and Scout informed Calpurnia and she called Atticus. Atticus told Jem that he would rather he shoot at cans, but he knew he’d go after birds he said he could shoot bluejays, but that it was a sin to shoot a mockingbird. Later, Atticus wouldn’t teach the kids how to shoot their guns, so their uncle did. She says that he is older than all of the other dads in the town, and he doesn’t do the same activities that they do. The chapter begins by Scout saying that Atticus is old.
